Red Osier Dogwood (Cornus sericea)

Sale price$10.00

Red osier dogwood is a large, multi-stemmed shrub with high ecological value, and four season interest in the garden. Younger twigs and branches are a bright red colour, especially when grown in full sun, providing colour in winter landscapes. Springtime brings an abundance of flat-topped clusters of creamy white flowers that are attractive to pollinators, followed by white fruits in the summer that are a favourite food of many birds. By fall, the deeply veined leaves turn from dark green to shades of orange, red and purple. Beyond its ornamental value, red osier dogwood is a useful plant for restoration purposes, especially in riparian areas; it holds soil and prevents erosion, shades waterways, provides habitat, feeds an array of wildlife, and is quick to establish.
