River Beauty (Chamaenerion latifolium)
It's clear to see how river beauty got its name; this plant is commonly found along gravelly riverbanks, and it truly is beautiful! River beauty is closely related to fireweed, although it is much smaller and does not spread as aggressively, making it a better choice for smaller gardens. It is a low growing, bushy perennial with clustered stems, bluish-green lance-shaped leaves, and vibrant magenta-pink blooms that look very similar to fireweed flowers. Also like fireweed, the leaves, shoots, and flowers are all edible. River beauty is well adapted to cold regions, and thrives in moist but well-drained sandy and rocky soils and full sun. Its rhizomatous growth helps to stabilize soil.
