Sitka Mountain Ash (Sorbus sitchensis)
Sitka mountain ash is a multi-stemmed shrub that is commonly found in mountainous areas of coastal BC, but can also be grown at lower elevations as an ornamental shrub for sunny gardens. Dense, flat-topped clusters of small white flowers bloom in the spring, attracting bees and other pollinators. Sitka mountain ash is especially beautiful in the fall, when its attractive compound leaves turn from green to striking shades of yellow to red, and huge clusters of orange-red fruits adorn its branches, attracting birds. While the berries are edible to humans, they are quite tart, and are best left for the birds.
