Slender Wintergreen (Gaultheria ovatifolia)

Slender wintergreen is a low-growing relative of salal that is commonly found in high mountain forests of southwest BC. This small, woody shrub spreads to form a ground-hugging mat, with stems up to 14" long. It has attractive evergreen foliage, and small, white to light pink, bell-shaped flowers, later becoming bright red edible fruits. This plant is not commonly cultivated, and can be difficult to establish. It is best planted in the shade of conifers in moist, acidic soil with plenty of organic matter.
