Western Sword Fern (Polystichum munitum)

Western sword fern is one of our region's most iconic plants. This evergreen perennial fern grows abundantly in the understory of moist coniferous forests along the Pacific coast, and the large clumps of tall, dark green, leathery fronds add lushness and beauty to shaded gardens.

Native Range & Habitat: Moist forests from low to middle elevations. Native to western North America from Alaska south to California, and east to Montana.
